We only booked for one night at this hotel but managed to sample most of what they had to offer. For starters we booked a standard double room including breakfast. The best deal we could get was through this site and the inclusion of breakfast made it a very good deal. Upon arriving the hotel reception was very modern and minimalist. The staff from the door, through reception, and to our room were very attentive which made for an excellent welcome. For a five star hotel I would say the room was comfortable at best. The decor was perhaps a little bland but the facilities were all as you would expect. We were not blown away but then there was nothing to complain about either.
For the evening we had cocktails in the famous MetBar on the ground floor. It was smaller than I had imagined but that actually gave the place an very intimate feel. Again, the service was of the highest order (but it was quiet). The bar staff were attentive without being intrusive and the cocktails were fantastic. We then moved up to the first floor as we had reserved a table at Nobu. My wife and I are big fans of Japanese food and were very excited about trying this landmark restaurant for the first time. We were not disappointed. It was a very busy night but the staff were again efficient and attentive. The food was out of this world (some of the finest sushi and sashimi I have ever tasted). Our waiter and waitress took the time to explain every dish we tried which just added to a fantastic dining experience. The wine list was excellent, if a little on the expensive side, but then dining at Nobu was never going to be cheap.
Had plans to go back to the MetBar afterwards but once Nobu had finished with us we were good to crash for the night.
Breakfast the next morning was served in the White Room just off the main Nobu restaurant. It was a bit of a soulless room for breakfast but once again the staff made up for it with their impecable service and the food was of the highest order.
We chose well as for late September it was warm and sunny so after breakfast we crossed the road for a stroll around Hyde Park. The Metropolitan enjoys an excellent location and being so close to the park was great.
Overall, I would say The Metropolitan is a great choice for a five star central London hotel. It perhaps doesn't have the opulence of some of the others but it certainly has a very warm and intimate boutique feel to the place. The bar and restaurant are perhaps more well known than the hotel itself and they justify their reputation. My overwhelming memory will be of the quality of the service which is always how I judge a good hotel. The staff were excellent and managed to hit just the right tone. It was a very expensive evening as the MetBar and Nobu are not cheap but we would definitely go back again and we would recommend a stay there.
